Gareth McAuley and Niall McGinn inspired Northern Ireland to their first ever European Championship finals victory with a 2-0 win over Ukraine in Lyon.
West Brom defender McAuley slotted a fine header four minutes after the interval before McGinn swept home in stoppage time to seal victory against a toothless Ukrainian side.
Michael O’Neill’s men headed into the game knowing defeat, coupled with Germany avoiding defeat against Poland later on Thursday night, would see them become the first nation eliminated from the competition.
But such pressure rarely seemed to affect from the Green and White Army as they produced a much-improved display from their opening-round defeat to the Poles, sealing an historic victory that strengthens their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
Northern Ireland now head to Paris to take on Germany knowing a point against the World champions will all-but secure their passage out of Group C.
